Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization
The Democratic Freedom Caucus is deeply alarmed by the absence of effective protections for reproductive rights following the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
Gender equality has always been a central battleground in this country’s struggle for freedom; as Abigail Adams reminded John Adams before the First Continental Congress in 1776 when urging him not to put too much power in the hands of husbands: “all Men would be tyrants if they could.”
The DFC has recognized since we were established in 1996 that there is no freedom more vital to human dignity than our rights over our own bodies, including our control over the choice of how and when to bear children. To be clear: reproductive decisions should chiefly lie with the individual who must actually bear the burdens of those decisions and that individual’s doctor, not government officials.
We urge the Democratic Party to do everything within its power to immediately implement federal, state, and local protections for reproductive rights and other fundamental freedoms called into doubt by the Supreme Court and state lawmakers. And we invite every freedom-loving American to join with the DFC in working to ensure that the Democratic Party fulfills its founding mission of safeguarding and expanding individual liberty.
